This video demonstrates how external, captive, and non-captive linear stepper motors operate.
Linear stepper motors convert electrical pulses into precise linear motion. The three main configurations differ in how the lead screw and nut are arranged:
- External linear stepper motors: The nut is driven along an external lead screw. The motor itself remains stationary while the nut moves linearly.
- Captive linear stepper motors: The lead screw is constrained from rotating and is driven through a hollow motor shaft. The screw extends and retracts in a fixed, non-rotating stroke.
- Non-captive linear stepper motors: The lead screw rotates and extends through the motor shaft, while the nut remains stationary. The screw can travel freely beyond the motor body.
