While worm gearboxes and servo motors can be physically connected, they are generally not recommended for standard applications due to significant mismatches in precision, speed, and functionality. Below is a detailed technical analysis of why this combination is often unsuitable.
1. Precision Mismatch
Standard worm gearboxes have a large backlash, resulting in positioning errors that far exceed the precision standards of servo motors. The primary advantages of servo motors are high precision, fast response, and high rigidity. Pairing them with a worm gearbox negates these benefits, making the combination unsuitable for high-precision transmission requirements and resulting in a waste of the servo motor's performance.
2. Noise, Heat, and Speed Conflicts
Worm gearboxes typically generate significant noise and heat, requiring robust lubrication and cooling. Their standard allowable input speed is usually limited to 1500 rpm.
In contrast, common servo motors often have a rated speed of 3000 rpm. This significant speed discrepancy creates a conflict: running the gearbox at the servo motor's rated speed will accelerate wear, increase heat generation, and amplify noise, thereby affecting equipment stability and shortening the service life.
3. Self-Locking Can Be Replaced by Servo Brakes
Many users select worm gearboxes primarily for their self-locking feature to prevent load drop (e.g., in vertical axes or inclined mechanisms). However, a servo motor equipped with a brake can fully replace this function. Upon power loss, the brake directly locks the shaft and secures the load, meeting safety requirements while offering better compatibility with the servo system than a worm gearbox.
4. Flange Size Compatibility
Most worm gearboxes currently on the market are designed to match three-phase asynchronous motors. There are no standard models that can be directly combined with standard AC servo motor flange sizes.
If you require a specific flange size to interface a worm gearbox with a servo motor, we can provide custom manufacturing options.
5. Usage Recommendation
Although physical integration is possible, the combination of worm gearboxes and servo motors is not an ideal pairing when considering performance, precision, and lifespan. We do not recommend this setup for conventional scenarios.
